is there a world outside my house...

i still haven't really found an answer to that question since we still spend our days indoors. I am now finally not sore so we have started family walks so i have been outdoors (in the blasted 80 degree FEBRUARY arizona weather.. it's ridiculous) but here are some new updates...

Kenzie pretends she fits newborn clothes.. that's right, this is size NEWBORN.. and is still too big for her, but oh well.. still looks cute. and she is opening her eyes more and more...love seeing those big blue things!

again in her cute outfit.. her first pants.. thanks cousin leah!

we go for walks in the fields.. yes, fields.. she HATES when we take her on smooth, paved roads. screams so loud.. then as soon as we off road it, she is sound asleep and loving it... guess we picked right in getting a jogging stroller that can handle the off-roading.

how she is when we go for our walks...

her favorite position for daddy to hold her in... we think it soothes her belly.

in her cute polo dress.. i know, too big.. but i get bored of her pjs all day every day so i just put her in the closest fitting clothes.

i mean seriously.. look at those cheeks.. it's the start of some great pres. holland joules (sp?)

her first real outfit.. i know you need a front view.. but i need my mom to send me those pictures cause they are on her camera.. hint hint.. but check out her sweet boots.. LOVE THEM! she wore them to texas roadhouse.. we thought it fitting:)

now, lest you let me lead you to believe she is always a nice, happy baby...she is teaching us all about how much "fun" a colicky baby can be.. yes, she is colicky... he belly rumbles all day and she cries all day trying to soothe her belly.. she only will sleep on top of ed or i (trying to get her to like her crib) but we are trying the gas relief drops and me cutting back on dairy and some other foods that might be bothering her.. she still is a super good baby and so adorable that we can't get mad when she wants to cry for 3 hours.. we just try to console her...

  3. Colic! Ahhhh! Valerie screamed for six months straight. It was hell! People in our ward never saw her not-fussing until she was 5 months old, then it started to gradually abate. I knew people who put off having children because they heard her scream for a whole entire night. She even outscreamed our well-meaning pediatrician.

When Garett was born, he started screaming just like Valerie did and I had since learned between their births that milk intolerance is a biggie. I went off dairy immediately and it took a week or two with no dairy in my diet at all for him to stop fussing, once it had worked its way out of both our systems. It was night and day...Garett was calm and stopped fussing altogether. With Ethan, I went off dairy the day he was born, and he was great.

Because I'm vegetarian, that basically made my diet very strict and I was a Vegan for about 6 months after the two boys. It was great for baby weight loss, but it didn't make for some very interesting meals. But...I had happy babies. I totally feel your pain! Many people would offer their services to watch Valerie to give me a break, but the one person who I felt comfortable with is the one who had a colicky baby herself. It is a special club to be in. Colic teaches you patience, like nothing else.

Valerie has been a dream child (now 13)since she finished her colic. She taught us how to be long-suffering, compassionate parents, especially when the going was rough. Hang in there!

  4. Oooo...another tip. One thing that would calm Valerie down is music. To be very precise...Enya. There was one song that we would play over and over because it would soothe her. Even now, when I play Enya, it immediately takes me back to walking the floor in the middle of the night with a fussy baby. Over time, she was conditioned to the song and that is what helped her sleep.

I always thought that if I could hear angels singing, that Enya would be he closest to it. Little babies are so new from heaven, maybe it is a little piece of home for them.

  5. Wow, is Mackenzie adorable! I love all those outfits and her headbands are really cute. I don't know much about colicky babies from experience, but I have some friends who swear by gripewater. I think you can just get it at the store (over the counter), like regular gas drops, but apparently they work a whole lot better. It seems like it's supposed to be cheaper too, but I don't know for sure. Let me know if you try them and they work for you.

Hang in there! Looks like you're doing well. She is lucky to have such a wonderful mom!
